Many people praise probiotics as the newest and best addition to your health regimen.  But what are they?  And are they really worth your time and money?  Are the health benefits enough to justify buying them?  Here we will discuss what probiotics are, why you should use them, where to get them, and their potential drawbacks.

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are known as “good bacteria.”  This is obvious in simply the layout of the word: “pro” for “good” and “biotic” for “bacteria.”  They are bacteria that help to regulate your digestive system and help keep it in top working condition.  Probiotics are found naturally in foods.  However, many people take probiotics as supplements in order to make sure their bodies have enough of them, or take them especially when they are having digestive issues that need to be resolved with the addition of good bacteria into the digestive tract.

Why should I use them?

Probiotics are not for everyone.  However, If you are having digestive problems, probiotics could be the thing that helps cure you.   Many people who take probiotics find relief from common digestive problems such as diarrhea, gas, constipation, and cramping.  This is because they help to replace good bacteria that are lost from the body when digestive problem take their toll on a person’s health.  However, you don’t have to have digestive problems to find value in probiotics.  Probiotics can also help prevent these problems, so you can take them as a precautionary measure.

A loss of good bacteria can also lead to other infections, such as yeast infections in women and urinary tract infections.  Probiotics can help prevent these ailments from happening.

Where can I get probiotics?

Probiotics are available in most pharmacies without a prescription.  However, if there is a specific type or brand of probiotic that you would like to take, ask your doctor for a note.  This will be helpful because you can take the note to your pharmacist so that he can help you find that specific type of probiotic.

Are they safe?

Probiotics are very safe for human consumption.  They are a very natural product; they are simply replacing bacteria that should naturally be in a person’s body, but for some reason is not there.  Probiotics can be found in food, such as yogurts and other milk products, so you know that you are not putting something unnatural and unsafe into your body.

However, as with any supplement, you should first discuss it with your doctor to make sure that it is right for you and doesn’t contradict with any other medicines you may be taking.

Conclusion

Overall, adding probiotics to your health regimen is a very smart thing to do.  They are great for digestive health and help your digestive system to work as it should.  However, it’s a good idea to discuss probiotics with your doctor before you decide to take them.  A doctor will be able to tell you if you really need them, or if there is any reason you shouldn’t add them to your diet.
