Lesser known causes of headaches
Find out what could be causing your headache
Headaches are something that everyone suffers at one point in their life. Most headaches are tension headaches, usually caused by stress. But headaches can be caused by lots of things – some of which are no big deal and some of which can be dangerous or life threatening. Here we will list some of the causes of headaches that are less discussed that you might not know about.
Eating ice cream too fast can cause a headache very quickly! If you eat your ice cream too fast, you know this phenomenon all too well. If not, an ice cream headache feels like a normal headache, sometimes more intense, that doesn’t last very long. It lasts anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. It is caused by rapid cooling of the roof of the mouth from consuming something that is too cold. This kind of headache is also known as “brain freeze.”
Headaches caused by being in airplanes are actually very common. Do you notice yourself getting headaches during takeoff and landing? You’re not alone. The pressure changes that occur during these times on a flight can cause short-lasting intense headaches. They usually only last about twenty minutes. Surprisingly, they are more common in men than women.
If you are a coffee drinker, you might experience a headache if you don’t get your morning cup of joe. This is because your body is used to having that daily dose of caffeine, and you will go through a bit of withdrawal if you don’t get it. On the other hand, those who are not used to drinking coffee might get a headache from consuming too much, caused by an excess of caffeine.
This kind of headache happens to people who have arthritis, as the name suggests. It is a pain that occurs right behind the eye that is thought to occur in those who have arthritis in the neck.
Hot dog headache
This is a strange name for a headache, but it refers to the headache that can occur when too much preservatives are consumed. Since hot dogs are high in nitrates (preservatives), they can give people headaches. Other processed meats are guilty of causing this type of headache as well.
If you take lots of pain relief medications you could be prone to getting this type of headache. This happens when a person takes too much fast-acting pain medication, such as migraine medication, on a regular basis and then fails to take it. The only way to combat this headache is to slowly ease yourself off of the medications that are causing it.
