Drinking lots of fluids can thin out that mucus in your throat and calm your throat. However, avoid drinking alcohol or diary as those can either cause a mucus buildup or irritate your throat more. Plus, if your house or workplace tends to be dry, especially in the winter, drinking a lot of liquids will help moisten your throat and mucus membranes.
Tea with Lemon and Honey
Hot tea with a little lemon and honey will give you a boost in fighting that cough. Lemon acts as an antiseptic agent and honey will help coat your throat, providing relief.
Cough drops, especially the menthol kind, will numb your throat, which can reduce your coughing reflex. Keep a bag on hand wherever you go so you always have one ready.
What decongestants do is dry up your nasal passages and decrease mucus. This will help reduce how much mucus gets into your throat and irritates it. However, if you use them for more than four days in a row, you can cause a resurgence of the mucus. It's best to use them for two to three days and then stop. Also be aware that decongestants increase blood pressure so if you already have blood pressure issues, you should talk to your doctor before using these meds.
