Flu remedies: Healing the natural way

Read to discover the best remedies for your flu symptoms

The flu is a common respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses.  It affects people in different ways – some may not even be aware that their bodies are at work fighting an illness, while others may be at home in bed for over a week with severe symptoms. There is no cure for the flu; however, your body knows how to fight the virus itself, by creating antibodies to kill the infection. Luckily, there are also many remedies that will help your body to fight off the virus, as well as some that will help prevent the next flu from coming on.
How do you know if you have the flu?
Flu symptoms tend to come on abruptly and be quite severe. If you have some of these symptoms, it is likely you have the flu.
  • Body aches
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Chest pressure or discomfort
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing/stuffy nose
Remedies
There are many natural ways to alleviate discomfort, pain, and aching, and strengthen your respiratory system in order to keep your body healthy and in prevention of future viruses. What's more, there are many herbs and vitamins, as well as conventional remedies, such as chicken noodle soup, teas, rest, and steaming that will ease your discomfort. Check out the following list of ways to heal your body the natural way.
Blow your nose
Do this as often as possible to get rid of pressure from mucus.
Inhale steam
Steam will help you relax, as well as moisturize your sinuses.
Salt water rinse
Do a nose rinse with salt water to release nasal congestion and gargle salt water as well to moisten your sore throat.
Heat packs
These will help to de-congest your sinuses.
Sleep
Make sure to get extra rest. Sleep with your head elevated with an extra pillow or two to alleviate blocked-up nasal passages.
Hot liquids
Hot tea will help clear sinuses, decongest, prevent dehydration, and soothe inflammation. Also try chicken noodle soup, or any kind of broth – this doesn’t just sooth a sore throat, but will liquefy mucus and keep you hydrated.
Healing herbs
There are a considerable number of natural herbs and vitamins that contain unique properties to help cure your flu symptoms:
  • Elderberry
  • Ginseng
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin C
  • Garlic
  • Honey
  • Echinacea
When to go to the doctor
Most often, your body will fight off the flu itself. However, it does affect some people worse than others. The flu tends to affect the elderly and pregnant woman more severely than young children, teens, and adults, but even the healthiest can be susceptible to these symptoms.

If you find yourself with these symptoms, it is time to get yourself to your doctor:

  • Vomiting
  • Serious dizziness
  • Trouble breathing
  • Pain in chest and/or abdomen
  • Confusion
  • Shortness of breath
What to do next
These natural remedies are great for your body, and can be taken regularly, even after your symptoms have subsided. They will aid in the prevention of the onset of future illnesses, and will help strengthen your body, especially the respiratory system. As your body continues to fight off the infection, you can continue to help by resting and drinking lots of fluids.
