This year's flu epidemic in the US has touched pretty much everyone's lives. This has probably been one of the most viral flu seasons we've had in a long time. Rather than just give up and wait to get the flu, you can take some simple precautions to keep yourself safe and healthy until this flu storm passes. Most of these tips are good to follow regardless of whether you're trying to avoid the flu.
Stay hydrated
Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated has a lot of benefits that will help keep you safe from the flu. You lose lots of water each day so that's why you've got to drink so much to replenish yourself. Water helps your body do everything from transport nutrients to regulate body temperature to help your circulation. It's so important to staying healthy. And you don't necessarily have to drink eight cups of water a day. Pay attention to when you feel thirsty and get something to drink. It's as simple as that.
Get some exercise
Exercise, preferably away from others. Staying active and healthy in part comes from regular exercise. You might want to avoid the crowded gym during this time of year where you can pick up some nasty virus and bacteria. But still you need to find a regular way to exercise. Even a short, 30-minute walk for 5 days a week can help prevent you from getting sick.
Avoid large crowds
Stay away from big crowds of people. Anywhere you have a big group of people, you have all the viruses and bacteria they bring with them. If you're worried about catching the flu, it's best to stay away from large groups of people at this time. Avoid the mall, subways, buses, elevators (stairs are a great way to get in shape, too!), and large events (like concerts).
Eat nutritiously
Eat healthy foods. You want to make sure you're eating healthy at this time of year so you can stay healthy. If your diet is rich in vitamins and nutrients, you're going to feel a lot better. Fill up on veggies and fruits, whole grains like quinoa, lean meats and poultry, and low-fat dairy items.

Citrus like grapefruits, mandarins and pineapple are great for vitamin C. Orange-colored veggies like pumpkin or squash have a lot of vitamin A. Both vitamin A and C are major immune system boosters. Plain yogurt also can help fight cold and flu bugs with its good bacteria and probiotics so make sure to add it into your diet regularly.
Get sufficient rest
Get lots of sleep. Sleep is vital to keeping your body strong and resistant to the flu and colds. Try for at least eight hours each night during this flu epidemic. Besides, don't you feel stronger and more ready for the day after a good night's sleep?
If you're having a hard time getting to sleep, try stopping use of electronics (computer, tablet, smartphone, etc.) one hour before bed and read a good book instead. That will help your mind relax after the day.
Keep your home germ-free
Disinfect regularly. The places that people touch most in your home or office need to be disinfected regularly during the flu season and beyond. Doorknobs, telephones, kitchen sink, bathroom faucet, keyboard, and mouse can are all germ collecting areas. Clean them regularly and also clean your kitchen sponge every week by tossing it in the microwave or in your dishwasher.
